Katlyn and Kyle had been engaged for four years, and it had been a bit of a bumpy ride for them and their families. So when the final day of planning finally arrived, they were more than ready to start the journey, plan their dream wedding, and they were absolutely buzzing with excitement!
Completely sold on the idea of a destination wedding, they reached out to us for guidance.
Their wedding dreams were all about throwing an amazing party at the beach, and Cabo was their top pick – at least during our first interaction! But where did they end up tying the knot?
What were your biggest fears when planning a destination wedding?
One of my biggest concerns was planning a wedding from afar. I am very detail oriented and I worried if someone be able to get inside my brain and live up to the expectation that I set for myself. Ensuring that all the details, vendors, and guests come together smoothly gave me an initial sense of anxiety.
Is there anything about the actual destination wedding experience that surprised you?
There was nothing that surprised me to be honest. It was PERFECT. I love to travel so having a destination wedding was the perfect fit for us once we started planning with Ashley.
What is your favorite memory of your destination wedding?
My favorite part of the wedding was being with everyone I love. The best part of having a destination wedding is being able to spend time with everyone for more than 1 day. This was OUR biggest reason of booking a destination wedding because we were spending all this money and wanted to be with people more than 1 day! Weddings bring together friends and families from all parts of life, and reunite people that have not seen each other in years. It made me realize how much I want to travel with my friends more.
Did you splurge on anything travel or wedding related? If so, what was it and was it worth it?
We splurged more on the wedding, than initially planned but it was not extremely out of budget. I think one of the biggest shockers for me was the Tax %. I definitely suggest keeping that in mind when booking vendors because they do not add that in the initial quote and then hit you with it at the end. Right now, the Mexico Tax is pretty high. As a couple we wrote down our 3 most important aspects for the wedding and these included: DJ, Flowers, and Photos. We choose to upgrade our DJ and Florals but decided to go with the onsite vendor for our photos. This is something I wish I ended upgrading on, but it still was an incredible day and our photos are beautiful.
We choose to use points to fly first class round trip. It kicked off our wedding in style and we thoroughly enjoyed our flight. #delta If you are able too, I would definitely splurge on this.
Did you attempt to *save* on anything travel or wedding related? If so, what was it and was it worth it?
Travel wise, we did not attempt to save. But, during the wedding planning process, we ended up saving quite a bit. Everything is negotiable in Mexico and use that to your advantage. When emailing vendors it is important to provide them with an amount you are willing to spend so they know what to offer you! The vendors through UNICO are great, and they are willing to work with you. It takes effort and time, but it is wonderful.
What kind of feedback did you get from your guests?
One of the biggest things that kept me up at night, was whether or not my guests were going to have fun. I wanted the people who spent all this money to come to Mexico and have an incredible vacation. In the end, I think we delivered that. Everyone got along amazing. We all hung out at the pool, did a cold plunge, and went to the beach multiple times. I heard more than once how amazing everything was, and it was a top location, hotel, and wedding. Many of our friends bought into the timeshare because they loved it so much. One of our couples bought 12 more nights with UNICO. I think it just proves how incredibly perfect it was.
Now that you’ve been through it, what is your #1 best piece of advice for wedding couples entering the planning process?
Trust the process. I was engaged for a long time, and I was so excited when we finally started to plan. It can be overwhelming at times, but wedding planning is supposed to be fun. My advice is to have fun with the whole process. I loved every second of it. Do not get caught up on the little things, they do not matter. What matters is if you had fun and if your guests did.
