Planning a honeymoon right after planning a wedding is a lot. (Truth be told, most couples hit their decision limit somewhere around the seating chart.) Brooke and Nick are good humans with busy jobs, the kind that come with long days. They were already headed to Dublin with friends and wanted to build off of that trip with a Switzerland and Italy itinerary for their honeymoon, but they weren’t sure how to pull it all together. The details kept slipping down the to-do list, and before they knew it, it was crunch time.
With a little over two months until departure, they knew what they wanted: plenty to see, real time to relax, and no packing up every other night. They also knew who to contact. They’d traveled with Alpaca Your Bags Travel twice as guests for their friends’ destination weddings
So we built a 12-night route with four home bases, easy rail connections, and a handful of experiences worth booking ahead. Everything else stayed open, so they could explore on their own.
The route was only part of the planning. We also worked through how comfortable they felt exploring independently, where a guide would add to the experience (and when to skip it), and how to use their budget across the whole trip. Those conversations shaped what we booked, and what we intentionally left open.

ToggleBrooke reached out in June for an end-of-August departure.Late summer in Europe fills up, so that timeline meant fewer hotels to choose from and the possibility of sold-out tickets to the main attractions on their wish list.
What made it work? They answered quickly, trusted our recommendations, and stayed open to adjustments. Mandie, our Europe and Italy specialist, drew on what she already knew about the routes, hotels, and our local partners to pull it all together. Our local partners helped us confirm hotel and tour availability as the plan came together and stay updated when options changed.
If you’re short on time, here’s what helps most: know your must-haves, make decisions quickly when options are not on hold, and stay flexible on the details.

Before they left, they got one digital itinerary with every hotel, train ticket, tour voucher, and transfer, plus the restaurant reservations they’d made on their own. No digging through email threads on a train platform.
We also covered the small stuff that makes a big difference once you’re there: map links for meeting up with their guides more confidently, easy sights on foot for self-paced wandering on free days, and how to be in touch with drivers and tour operators. Plus we connected our couple to 24/7 in-destination support. Having that level of support provides a sense of comfort when you are in a different country and time zone.
The goal was for them to feel prepared and still have plenty of freedom. Their review says it better than we can:
“From the flights, trains, hotels, excursions, etc., everything went so smoothly. The itinerary was catered to what we wanted to do, with a perfect mix of planned days and free days.”

Here’s the full route, why we built it this way, and the moments they’re still talking about.
| Home base | Nights | Highlights |
| Zurich, Switzerland | 3 | Old Town and the lakefront, plus a day trip to Lucerne and Mount Pilatus |
| Florence, Italy | 2 | Time to explore the city independently, with plans to see Bologna by train on their own |
| Rome, Italy | 3 | Small-group Colosseum and Vatican tours, plus self-paced sightseeing |
| Sorrento, Italy | 4 | A guided Capri day with a Blue Grotto visit, a Neapolitan cooking class, and free time to explore the Amalfi coast |
Some couples want every hour mapped out. Others want to wake up and decide what sounds good over breakfast. Most honeymooners land somewhere in the middle, and figuring out where you land is one of the first things we ask.
For these two, we booked the experiences where a guide, advance tickets, or a hands-on activity would make a real difference. Their open days came with suggestions and pre-planned walking routes, so they never had to start from a blank search bar on vacation. They just picked what sounded good that day.
Instead of bouncing between hotels in Switzerland, we recommended three nights in Zurich. Their riverside hotel on the Limmat put them close to the main station and within easy reach of the Old Town and lakefront. Translation: they could wander Zurich one day and hop a train the next. Location wasn’t the only priority for this part of their stay. At the top of their list was air conditioning they could control themselves, which plenty of Zurich hotels don’t offer, especially in older buildings. In what turned out to be Switzerland’s hottest summer on record, that was a smart call. On short notice, it took some digging, but we found a hotel that checked both boxes: a great location and a cool, comfortable room at the end of a long day of exploring.
For Lucerne, we booked their round-trip train tickets, sent a short list of ideas, and left the rest up to them. They spent the day at Mount Pilatus and the lake, and it turned into one of the highlights of their honeymoon.
That’s the sweet spot we aim for: the logistics handled, a few ideas in your back pocket, and a day that still feels like yours. (They came home already plotting their return to Switzerland.)
Your route matters as much as your stops. We wanted every travel day to move them toward the next destination, with hotels that made the trains easy to use. Their Zurich to Florence train took about five and a half hours with one change in Milan. We reserved seats on both legs, so they weren’t hunting for two seats together while juggling luggage. From Florence, they continued to Rome, then Naples, where a private driver was waiting to take them to Sorrento.
In Zurich, Florence, and Rome, we chose hotels within a few minutes’ walk of the train station. They rolled their bags to the platform instead of paying for a private transfer at every arrival and departure, and that money went toward the hotels and experiences they cared about most.
We still booked drivers when it counted: arriving at Zurich Airport, getting from Naples station to Sorrento, and the early-morning ride from Sorrento to Naples Airport to fly home.
These choices all worked together. Staying near the stations made rail travel practical and reduced transfer times and costs, while private drivers made the less straightforward journeys easier.
Having a travel agent who specializes in European honeymoon planning means having someone on your side to talk through those decisions and how they show up in your trip. For our couple, that started with knowing they were comfortable using the trains and walking to their hotels. Private transfers at every stop would have added cost without adding much value for them. That allowed us to put that budget toward the things that mattered most to them.
Rome is where a good guide earns their keep. We booked small-group tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, plus the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, with guides who could bring the history to life. Skip-the-line access meant bypassing the longer general admission ticket queues.
Between tours, Mandie created walking routes that strung together highlights like the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, so they could enjoy free days, but did not have to do so blindly.
They really wanted to spend a day of their honeymoon out on the water and initially pictured a private boat charter. After talking through the cost, they decided they’d rather spread that budget across the honeymoon than put so much toward one day. We recommended a small-group guided Capri day with a Blue Grotto visit, giving them an experience they were excited about while leaving more room in the budget for the rest of their trip.
They explored Capri town and Anacapri, then slipped into the grotto by rowboat, where sunlight glowing through an underwater opening turns the water brilliant blue. (Entry depends on sea conditions, so it’s never guaranteed. For them, it worked out beautifully.)
A cooking class was also high on their wish list. We arranged a Neapolitan cooking class in Sorrento intentionally, saving that hands-on experience for the slower coastal stretch of their honeymoon. It gave them time to make something together and became another favorite.
When Mandie asked what stood out most, they couldn’t pick just one:
“We both are torn between our day trip to Lucerne and our time in Sorrento! Lucerne is just absolutely breathtaking and we desperately want to get back to Switzerland in general ASAP. Sorrento was SO much fun – we loved the boat tour and cooking class!!”

This couple spent 12 nights across Zurich, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento, which left room for guided experiences and free days along the way. The right length depends on your priorities and pace. With less time, we’d suggest fewer home bases rather than squeezing in more cities.
For this itinerary, the Zurich to Florence train had one change in Milan and took about five and a half hours, with reserved seats on both legs. We plan connections around the schedules for your travel dates.
Nope. We can arrange your transportation and must-do experiences and leave other days open, with suggestions so you’re never starting from scratch. The right balance depends on how comfortable you feel exploring on your own.
A travel advisor brings the route, hotels, transportation, and experiences together around your priorities, budget, and travel style. For this couple, that meant booking their flights out of Dublin, finding a Zurich hotel with the air conditioning they needed, choosing home bases, reserving trains and seats, and selecting hotels near stations to reduce transfer costs. We planned key experiences ahead and left room for independent exploring. Before departing, they received a digital itinerary, destination guides, and support during the trip, so they could feel prepared and focus on enjoying their honeymoon.
Just your travel dates and a sense of how you like to travel. On your complimentary planning call, we’ll talk through what matters most to you: guided sightseeing, hands-on experiences, museums, free time to explore on your own, or a mix of everything. Then we’ll look at how it all fits your budget. Some couples come with a list of must-dos, and others aren’t sure yet and want suggestions. Both are a great place to start.
For travel during Europe’s peak season, we recommend starting 8 to 12 months ahead. Planning later can still work, but hotel choices may be more limited, and tickets for popular sights can sell out. You’ll also need to make decisions quickly, since availability can change before bookings are confirmed. Starting early gives you more options and time to choose what fits your trip. If your departure is closer, reach out and we’ll talk through what’s possible.
Maybe it’s Switzerland and Italy. Maybe it’s somewhere else entirely. Either way, we start with you: the places you’re dreaming about, the experiences you’re excited for, and how much of each day you want planned versus wide open.
Then we handle the route, hotels, trains, transfers, and tickets, so you can focus on the fun part (and on each other). See how honeymoon planning works with Alpaca Your Bags Travel.
